CL CUSTOM CYMBALS info & examples
Some Description abbreviations -
BH - ‘Blacksmith Hammer’ - a heavy, sharply convex hammer is used (usually in the initial shaping session). This hammer creates maximum compression and deformation.
BL - ‘Blunt Bit Lathing’ - Similar to Lathe Tensioning. A blunt bit (slightly different to the bit in the ‘LT’ acronym) adds tension to the cymbal without removing weight.
CLTB - ‘Craig Lauritsen from a Turkish Blank’ - The cymbals in this series are the result of my intuitive skill being allowed to have free rein and each cymbal is a completely unique entity free of preconceived design goals.
DC - ‘Dark and Complex’
DD - ‘Dark & Dry’ - created with minimal hammering
DM - ‘Dark Matter’ (series name)
EBS - ‘Edge Band, Small (hammer)’ - a hammered band on the edge only, using a small hammer.
ET - ‘Extra Trash’ - a bit of extra cluster hammering in the initial shaping phase
ETA - ‘Extreme Taper’ - a very thin edge, with increasing thickness from edge to bridge
FB - ‘Flatter Bell’ - heavily hammered, particularly close to the bridge to give the bell a flatter profile
FJ - ‘Funk/Jazz’
HHB - ‘Hand Hammered Bell’
HSB - ‘Hand Shaped Bell’ - completely hand formed and shaped bell
LT - ‘Lathe Tensioned’ - a special lathe bit adds more tension and higher frequency sibilance
NP - ‘Natural Patina’ - the patina is made of natural ingredients like lemon juice, vinegar and salt
OH - ‘Over-hammered’ - meaning hammered post lathing
TH - ‘Turkish Hammer’ - smaller face causes a little more bronze deformation. It’s also useful for me to know what hammer I’ve used on a particular project :)
SB - ‘Sabian Blank’ - No longer available unfortunately as sabian have ceased to provide the blanks
SH - ‘Smaller (and convex) Hammer’ - used particularly in the initial shaping session
SHM - ‘Special Hammering Method’ - the outcome is larger hammer-marks
SL - ‘Skim Lathing’ - minimal lathing removing mainly oven crust
ST - ‘Smooth Top’ - the smooth finish creates a smoother spread and quieter wash
UB - ‘Un-Hammered Bell’
WBL - ‘Wide Band Lathing’
